Crisis Chat

Confidential Support, Wherever You Are

Sometimes reaching out by phone is not possible—or simply doesn't feel like the right fit. The Center for Survivors Crisis Chat offers a safe, confidential way to connect with a trained advocate and receive immediate support.

MSU’s Center for Survivors Crisis Chat is staffed by volunteer crisis advocates from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. EST, seven days a week.

Our volunteers provide support to survivors of sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking, and sexual harassment, as well as friends, family members, and other supportive individuals.

You do not need to be in crisis to use Crisis Chat. Whether you have questions, need emotional support, or want help understanding your options, we are here to listen and help.

How Crisis Chat Can Help

Through Crisis Chat, volunteer advocates can provide:

  • Emotional support and crisis intervention
  • Information about your rights and options
  • Safety planning for relationship violence or stalking
  • Assistance navigating campus and community resources
  • Referrals to counseling, advocacy, medical, legal, and shelter services
  • Support for friends, family members, and concerned others

Crisis Chat is not a replacement for therapy or ongoing counseling services. However, it can provide immediate support, information, and connection to resources.

What to Expect

When you connect with Crisis Chat, you will be connected with a trained volunteer who will:

  • Provide survivor-centered, trauma-informed support
  • Help you explore options and resources
  • Respect your choices and autonomy

You choose what information you share. There is no obligation to disclose details about your experience.

Confidentiality

The Center for Survivors is a confidential resource. Information shared during Crisis Chat is not reported to the university, law enforcement, or other offices.

However, there are limited circumstances in which we are legally required to break confidentiality, including:

  • Suspected child abuse or elder abuse
  • An immediate threat of harm to yourself or others
  • When required by a court order or subpoena

By using Crisis Chat, you acknowledge these limits to confidentiality. If you have questions or concerns, please ask your advocate to explain confidentiality before sharing information.

Safety and Privacy

Your privacy is important to us. We do not ask for identifying information such as your name, student ID number, or location unless there is concern for your immediate safety or the safety of someone else.

Please remember that internet-based communication can never be guaranteed to be completely secure. If you are concerned that someone may be monitoring your device or internet activity, you may wish to contact our crisis line instead.

If you do not feel safe sharing information through chat, please call our 24/7 Crisis Hotline at (517) 372-6666.

Suicide and Homicide Concerns

If you tell us that you are actively considering harming yourself or someone else, we will encourage you to seek immediate emergency assistance and may contact emergency services when necessary to protect safety.

If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency or are in immediate danger, call 911 right away.

Is Crisis Chat Right for Me?

Crisis Chat may be a good option if:

  • You prefer typing rather than talking on the phone
  • You need support in a private or quiet setting
  • You have questions about available resources
  • You are seeking immediate emotional support

Need Immediate Assistance?

If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.

For 24/7 support, contact the Center for Survivors Crisis Hotline at (517) 372-6666.

If you are not part of Michigan State University or are outside the greater Lansing area, additional 24/7 support is available through the following crisis lines:

  • State of Michigan Sexual Assault Crisis Line at 1-855-VOICES4 (1-855-864-2374)
  • State of Michigan Domestic Violence Crisis Line at 1-866-VOICEDV (1-866-864-2338).
  • RAINN National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673); Chat live at hotline.rainn.org/online.
  • National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE(7233); Chat live at https://www.thehotline.org/

You're Not Alone

Whether you are seeking support for yourself or someone you care about, Crisis Chat offers a confidential space to ask questions, receive support, and connect with resources. Help is available, and you do not have to navigate this alone.
