Advocacy Services

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

Advocacy services are designed to help you understand your options, access resources, and navigate systems that may feel overwhelming. Whether you are seeking support after a recent experience or addressing ongoing concerns, our advocates are here to help you identify what feels safest, most supportive, and most helpful for you.

What Is Advocacy?

Advocates provide emotional support, information, problem-solving assistance, and connections to resources. Because every survivor’s experience and needs are different, we work collaboratively with you to identify your goals and develop a plan that supports your choices.

You decide what support feels right for you. Throughout the process, you remain in control of your choices and next steps.

How Can an Advocate Help?

Safety Planning

Advocates can help you identify concerns, assess options, and develop a personalized plan to support your safety and well-being.

Emotional Support

Receive compassionate, nonjudgmental support from a trained advocate who understands the impact of interpersonal violence.

Resource Navigation

Learn about available campus and community resources, services, and support options.

Systems Navigation

Advocates can help you understand processes, prepare for appointments or meetings, attend meetings with you when appropriate, and navigate complex systems.

Accommodations and Support

Explore available accommodations and support measures related to academics, employment, housing, transportation, and other areas impacted by violence.

Criminal and Civil Legal Systems

Advocates can provide information about reporting options, court processes, protective orders, and available community legal resources. They can also help you prepare for meetings or appointments related to criminal or civil legal systems and attend with you when appropriate.

Common Reasons Survivors Contact an Advocate
  • I am not sure what my options are.
  • I need help developing a safety plan.
  • I would like support navigating university processes.
  • I am considering reporting and want more information.
  • I need help connecting with resources.
  • I am supporting someone who has experienced violence.
  • I want someone to talk to about what happened.

You do not need to know exactly what you need before reaching out. Advocates can help you explore options and determine what support may be most helpful.

What Can I Expect?

Your first conversation with an advocate is an opportunity to discuss your concerns, ask questions, and identify what support you are seeking. Advocates will listen, provide information, and help you understand available options.

You are never required to report, pursue legal action, or make any decisions before you are ready. Our role is to support you in making informed choices that feel right for you.

How Do I Get Started?

Connecting with an advocate is simple.

Contact our office at advocacy@msu.edu to learn more about advocacy services or schedule an appointment with an advocate.

Whether you are looking for information, support, safety planning, or help navigating a difficult situation, we are here to help.
